SURE and ECONAT in Colombia extend the cooperation
From 21st to 23nd August 2014 SURE President Jürgen Breuste and General Director of EcoNat Colombia, Henry Garay Sarastry had intensive talks together in Salzburg, Austria, to develop the already started cooperation. Prof. Breuste was in February 2014 invited by EcoNat to participate in a very well by EcoNat Ltda. Colombia (www.econat.biz) and the Alexander von Humboldt Biological Resources Research Institute, Colombia (www.humboldt.org.co) prepared series of workshops in Barranquilla, Medellin and Bogota on Urban Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services. This showed the already reached results and the rising interest to include these subjects into the modern urban development in this Latin American country. The reached results are already visible in projects, education courses and studies and in the urban planning.
The first SURE internship of Kerstin Huber, Technical University Dresden under the co-supervision of Prof. Breuste could be placed in Instituto Humboldt this year. Next internships targeted to support very precise research and development projects in Bogota are planned and offered for further SURE trainees. This will be a good chance to participate in urban biodiversity and ecosystem service activities in Colombia and to learn how this can be practically done in concrete projects.
Both partners signed a Memorandum of Understanding and agreed in several steps for further cooperation under the cooperation title
“Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services in Urban Regions” (BESUR)
In the “Program on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services in Sub-Urban Zones of Colombian Cities” SURE, EcoNat and Instituto Humboldt Colombia will be cooperative partners. It is visible that biodiversity and ecosystem services are not to limit to administrative urban areas but must be recognized, investigated and strategically planned for whole urban regions. This will be a new step in understanding urban systems, urban ecological research, design and management. SURE and Colombia are in the forefront to practice this in projects. Ecosystems of sub-urban and peri-urban zones are beside the cores of cities the providers of most and important ecosystems for the whole urban region. This is the reason to concentrate more research and management in these sub-urban zones with this focus. New eco-cities will be depending of the balance of biodiversity and ecosystem services of all the parts of its region.
Several concrete projects will be developed together. One of the first will be on the ecosystem services of the Eastern Cordillera of Bogotá (Cerros Orientales de Bogotá) and its importance for the urban region. This will include the plans for the new path from Bogotá to the Cerro de Monserrate (www.cerromonserrate.com) as Biodiversity Trail of Bogotá.
SURE and EcoNat plan for a web based internationally accessible study course on “Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services in Urban Regions” for international students and managers connected to this subject. EcoNat has already very much experiences and much success in these education programs. Together with SURE a new step in the areas of urban ecology will be made together.
